Denver Whiplash Hurts Children/Babies Too!
Denver CO Whiplash Hurts Children/Babies Too!
Surprising Statistics
Motor-vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Many of these deaths can be prevented; placing children in age-and size-appropriate car seats and booster seats reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half.
Children properly restrained are 75 percent less likely to be injured; those who are in the front seat are 106 percent more likely to be seriously injured. Children exposed to a passenger airbag are 370 percent more likely to be seriously hurt, and a rollover crash increases the likelihood of serious problems by 229 percent!
Save a Childs Life
It’s vitally important to make sure your child is belted in properly. Follow these guidelines:
- Infants (birth to at least 1 year of age and weighing at least 20 pounds) are required to be restrained in a rear-facing convertible seat.
- Toddlers (over 1 year of age and weighing 20-40 pounds) need a forward-facing convertible seat.
- Young children (ages 4-8 years, unless at least 4’8” tall and weighing more than 40 pounds) need a seatbelt positioning booster seat in a forward-facing position.
- The child can sit without a booster seat (shoulder/lap belt only) when the lap belt sits across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest (usually at around age 8 or when at least 4’9” tall).
- Children ages 12 and younger should ride in the back seat at all times.
Just because your child is properly restrained, does not mean they can’t get hurt in an accident. Just like adults they can have problems too, even if they were belted in.
Has Your Child Been Hurt?
Unlike adults, children have trouble verbalizing accident related problems. Check this list for signs your child may have been hurt in a crash.
- Is your child cranky, or irritable?
- Do they seem excessively tired?
- Do they suffer night terrors?
- Is their focus poor?
- Has their appetite changed?
- Are their bowel movements different?
- Are they excessively clingy?
If a child has any of the above symptoms, call our office immediately.
Remember;
“As the twig grows, so grows the tree.” The right care can make the difference for their future. Left untreated their injuries may create lifetime pain. Call (303)394-2273 (CARE).
